Why Speaking English Is More Important Than Studying It
Most parents in Japan grew up learning English through textbooks and tests. But many are still hesitant to try speaking it, or they just can’t.
That’s not your fault. That’s how the system is structured.
It’s completely understandable and not surprising.
As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, you don’t need to speak English — it’s not a must — but it’s very good and can offer so much to those who pursue it.
At Wonder English, we do things differently.

日本の多くの親御さんは教科書やテストで英語を学んでこられたかと思います。
しかし、多くの方はまだ話すことに抵抗があったり、話せないこともあります。

そのようなシステムになっているからです。
とても理解できることで、不思議なことではありません。
英語を話すことは必須ではありません。
しかし、話せることは良いことであり、挑戦する人にはたくさんのメリットがあります。

Why do we focus on speaking?
Speaking is real. Your child can use it right away.
Speaking builds confidence. Confidence leads to more English.
Speaking helps listening. Children start to understand faster.
Speaking makes grammar easier later. Once they’re used to English, grammar starts to make sense.
なぜ話すことに重点を置くのか？
話すことは実際に使えます。 お子さんはすぐに使うことができます。
話すことで自信がつきます。 自信がつくと、さらに英語を使いたくなります。
話すことで聞く力も伸びます。 子どもたちはより早く理解できるようになります。

But what about grammar and school tests?
We know grammar and tests are important in Japan. We respect that.
But trying to learn grammar before speaking is like taking a shower with all your clothes on. It’s the wrong way around.
